Effective executive leadership is perhaps the greatest indicator for nonprofit organization success.  We know that 76,000,000 baby boomers will be retiring over the next decade.  Do you have a CEO who is planning to retire in a year or two?  How do you transition effective leadership?

Here are 10 keys to effective transition of nonprofit executive leadership:

  1. Have a strong board…if the board is strong…the CEO hire is more likely to be strong.
  2. Have a strategic plan in place so you know where you want the organization to go over the next 5 years.
  3. Have the Board define the type of person who will lead them toward the stated goals.
  4. Consider hiring a 2nd in command with idea that he or she may assume the leadership position based upon job performance.
  5. Assign the best board leadership to lead the search process.
  6. Consider hiring an expert in nonprofit leadership to help you identify the best talent.
  7. Have a robust search process to identify and vet the best candidate possible.
  8. Stay away from hiring “the strongest in a weak field.” Have multiple candidates to choose from.
  9. Have someone active in the search who is a shrewd evaluator of nonprofit talent.
  10. Have someone active in the search with the connections to confirm the candidates’ background and productivity.
