Summary

Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) is a national faith-based health organization  that operates in 19 states and includes 73 hospitals; 40 long-term care, assisted- and residential-living facilities; two community health-services organizations; and home health agencies.  In fiscal year 2010, CHI provided almost $590 million in charity care and community benefit, including services for the poor, free clinics, education and research. With annual revenues of approximately $9 billion, CHI is the nation’s third-largest Catholic health care system.

The Catholic Health Initiatives Foundation (CHIF) is located in Colorado Springs, CO.

The President and CEO of the Foundation (CHIF) is an articulate spokesperson and champion for philanthropy within CHI who models best practices in the field of nonprofit fundraising leadership. The CHIF President and CEO is also responsible for developing and sustaining effective relationships and partnerships with major national and regional corporations,foundations, government entities, local providers of CHI health care (referred to as MBO’s) and their foundations, the CHIF board of directors, and CHIF’s executive leadership team.

The CHIF President and CEO reports to the CHI Senior Vice President, Strategy & Business Development, and to the CHIF Board of Directors.

Position Detail

• Key Areas of Leadership

Strategic Leadership
Lead a national foundation with broad oversight of nearly 60 local CHI healthcare foundations with over $300 million in total assets, and 225+ associates. Oversee and promote an integrated development model at the national, regional and local MBO levels.

Fiscal and Operational Management
Assure effective and efficient operations of CHIF Support Services, providing core infrastructure and processes in support of local MBO foundation activities. Manage the finances of CHIF including the annual budget. Work with CHIF Executive Leadership and CHIF Board, as well as regional and local Chief Development Officers (CDOs) to achieve both earned income and fund raising goals.

Fundraising/Relationships
Build and oversee effective long term funding partnerships with corporations and foundations and other major funding sources at the national level. Assure understanding of CHI’s mission, vision and key strategies at a national level and across MBOs.

Communications
Promote effective communications with external constituencies (ex., national foundations and corporations). Also, assure effective communications with key stakeholders at the CHI national and local level, including CHI senior leadership, CHIF Board, regional and local CDOs, MBO CEOs and local foundation boards.

Board Management and Administration
Provide recommendations to the CHIF Board of Directors with respect to policies, programs, and strategic direction of CHIF while providing logistical support for all Board activities. Provide educational opportunities and guidance for Board members.

General Administration and Human Resources Management
Administer the overall operation of CHIF, including reviewing and evaluating the results of development program activities and performance benchmarks for Vice Presidents and Directors. Support recruitment efforts to hire professional development executives at the regional and local level.

• Serve as a corporate officer on the CHI Foundation Board of Directors

• Lead the National Development Officers Advisory Council for CHI with executive and Chief Development Officer with representation from across CHI

• Lead the CHI Foundation – President’s Advisory Council with executive representation from each region of CHI including the national support office

• Working with the Senior Vice President, Operations and CDO for each CHI region, ensure that goals are being met through oversight of the strategic development plan for each region

• Assure that that goals of CHIF Support Services for local foundations are being met

• Assure that local foundation and MBO customer satisfaction related to CHIF Support Services is measured regularly and action plans for improvement are implemented

• Treat professional and administrative support staff, volunteers, leadership both within and external to CHI with honesty, candor, respect, and adheres to the core mission of CHI

• Work in collaboration with CHI’s Finance Group and local MBOs to develop and monitor appropriate grants management infrastructure and reporting systems

• Assure that timely, accurate, and complete financial reports on the operations of the CHI Foundation are provided to CHI leadership, the CHIF Board, the CHIF Executive Team, regional SVPs-Operations and CDOs and each MBO and affiliated local foundation

Operational Competency Statements:

• Working knowledge and experience of best practices in development/fundraising including: major and planned gift giving, capital fundraising campaigns, annual support; corporate and foundation support, donor relations

• Experience of best practices in nonprofit administration, fiscal and organizational system-wide management and administration of grants and donations

• Must have strong leadership and communication skills

• Must be familiar with development data management systems (Blackbaud products preferred)

• Must be skilled at working with all levels of development healthcare related professionals to include, but not limited to, CEO’s, Board Members, CDOs, CFOs, DOs, Staff, as well as matrix-based management programs

• Must be able to interpret and communicate financial statements and related data

• Reports to: Catholic Health Initiatives Senior Vice President, Strategy & Business Development and to CHIF Board of Directors

• Supervises: Direct executive reports (Regional Vice Presidents of Development,  Vice President of National Development and Grants, Vice President Support Services); Executive Assistant

• Contacts: MBO, JOA, CHI Regional and National Leadership; CHIF and Local Foundation Boards; MBO CFOs; CHI Foundation Executive Leadership; CHI Regional and Local Chief Development Officers, Executive Directors, and Foundation Presidents; Major Donors; Political and Community Leaders; Key Executives at Major Corporations, Foundations and other Funding Organizations; Government Officials

Formal Education Required, and/or Equivalent Experience:

• A baccalaureate degree (Masters Degree preferred)

• Ten years of fund development experience (preferably leading a multiple hospital and/or foundation healthcare system); with demonstrated fundraising accomplishments

• A proven track record of developing comprehensive development programs, managing/motivating staff and governance, and working effectively throughout an organization.

Professional Certification (preferred):

• Certification (FAHP, CFRE) by the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy or the Association of Fundraising Professionals
