How To Identify Planned Gift Prospects

How do you identify those who might be interested in a planned gift?  Characteristics of planned gift donors include the following:

  • Older Individuals (age 60 and up)
  • Single or widowed
  • Without children
  • Often female
  • Past history of involvement with the organization
  • Have appreciated property

All planned givers certainly do not fit the above profile.  However, many do and you should focus your efforts on individuals who have the above traits.  You need a systematic method for identifying these individuals.  Ways of identifying prospects include the following:

  • One-on-One Visits.  The best way to identify prospects is to go out and meet with them.  Spending one hour in someone’s living room listening to their interests will help qualify prospects better than any other method.
  • Purchase of Age and other Demographic Data.  Age is probably the most important criteria in identifying planned gift prospects.  Today, it is possible to purchase data that will identify ages for 80% or more of the individuals on your prospect list.  You simply send your list of supporters to the vendor and they “match” it with names in their database.  Other demographic information is also available.   Below is a vendor who provides this service.

  • Referrals.  Referrals are a good source of prospects.  Other staff, board members, donors, and allied professionals (attorneys, CPA’s, financial planners, etc.) are often your best sources for planned gift prospects.
  • Mailings. Another good way to identify prospects is the use of special planned giving mailings that include a reply device. These reply devices allow the prospect to request further information.
  • Certain constituency groups.  Often an organization will have certain groups of supporters who are more likely to make planned gifts.  For example, a hospital may have an auxiliary group of volunteers made up primarily of older females.  This is a natural group to target for planned gifts.

Identification of prospects is the first step.  Next steps include:

  • Building relationships with the prospects
  • Listening to their needs
  • Presenting them with planned gift opportunities
