As private dollars become highly competitive, targeted, and extended in their commitments, it is certainly worth the efforts of non-profits to look to the public sector (local, county, state, and federal governments) for opportunities to match and leverage dollars.
You may think this surprising, given the government efforts to spend fewer dollars. Currently governments are looking at ways to leverage their dollars. Therefore, Public and Private Partnerships are becoming more attractive to these sectors.
Consider this:
- Nonprofit charter schools like the Academie Lafayette and Southwest Charter can now provide choices to parents and students in Kansas City, Missouri thanks to school formulas sharing that allows public districts to provide money per student attending the Charter School. This revenue can also be leveraged in attracting loans, grants, and bond money for bricks and mortars. Academie Lafayette utilized this in purchasing the J.C. Nichols School within the Kansas City Missouri School District.
- Neighborhood Housing Services of Kansas City, Missouri is a 30-year old Community Development Corporation and has been able to utilize a variety of City grants and loans in order to provide affordable housing in central Kansas City. Additional support is provided by federal government funds provided as a pass-through from national public/non-profit agencies.
- Even City initiated projects such as Union Station and the proposed downtown arena in Kansas City, Missouri has created a public/private partnership. Sprint will provide private money for the naming rights, AEG will provide private funds for management and facility oversight, and the City of Kansas City will provide bond monies through voter approval.
